In
general, people looking for a new mattress do not know what they expect
to get with their money. The internet will provide you with thousands
of different models but not actually tell you what you should be
looking for.
Many retailers
will have identical mattresses with different fabric coverings and
colours with a bewildering array of prices. There is only one question
that you need to ask:
Can you get a
better quality
mattress for the same or less money?
You can, but you
will need to know the exact specifications of each mattress. This
is the hard part because the fundamental information that you need will
rarely be visible on the mattress description tag. In fact, take a
moment to read some of those descriptions and you will find that many
are long on marketing and short on fact.
If the tag says
contains sumptuous layers of premium filling, you should be asking
yourself, what type of filling? How many layers? if you do not have the
facts,
then you are in need of speaking to our sales team.
Cage sprung
mattresses or continuous coil sprung are cheaper
mattresses. Do not let
the name on the label or pretty fabrics fool you on this point The next
step up the ladder is a pocket spring
mattress and these are pound for pound
better than any mattress with a cage sprung interior.
All cage sprung
mattresses have a similar cage spring interior. The springs are held
together with helicle wire and the only difference is the gauge
(thickness) of the wire and the design of the mattress. The average
cage spring is usually six inches deep with an inch of compressed
filling to create an eight-inch deep mattress. Six-inch mattresses tend
to use a cheaper four-inch spring system.
Normally cage
sprung mattresses are not counted, but there should be about 350
connected springs in a king
mattress. However the manufacturers
have the capability to drastically reduce this number to make really
cheap
mattresses for the economy and budget shopper.
Quality cage
sprung mattresses should not bend easily anything that bends easily or
falls under the economical or budget should really be for young
children who carry little weight.
A good
mattress
should be at least ten inches deep to contain at least 2 inches of
wadding and compressed filling on either side. So if you can lift and
bend the mattress like Hercules,
use that burst of super human strength
and up your limit from all the other economical and budget mattresses
Many mattress
manufacturers produce a range of mattresses that will fall in to the
cheap, budget or economy category. At best, you are paying for a
bag of springs with little wadding and fabric covering. That is why
cheap
mattresses are sometimes known as a bag of springs.
